In-between

In-between two states, merging in or merging out; two communities, the surfers and the citizen; and two spaces.

"Hanstholm is a city up on the northern coast of Denmark, facing Norway.
It is a fisherman’s town but the place is also famous for its landscapes and the strong wind constantly blowing. The place is full of potential. It is a world famous spot for surfers, kitesurfers and windsurfers.

The map is obvious,  Hanstholm is organised in two separate parts. The harbour and the city center, only constructed along one side of a North-South axis linking both ends of the plateau. This axis should be the starting point of Hanstholm new development.
It means developing its social life, change its day-to-day monotony. A foyer for young people is planned and artists are invited to come and use a few studios during winter and to exhibite their work during summer.

The wind in Hanstholm is part of the town characteristics. It is then important to design protected areas but also to use the wind to ventilate or produce energy. But a place just to enjoy the elements could also be designed in such a strong nature environment.
This rough nature and the abandonned, graffited bunkers could be a great source of inspiration in materials experiments, rought concrete, brick work, rusty steel or floated wood for example."
